We ALL want to look our best, and for many patients, wrinkle-relaxing treatments (a.k.a. botulinum
toxin A or BTX injections) are a great tool to look and feel younger!
Here are some FAQs about BTX:
Q: How does it work?
A: A tiny amount of BTX-A is injected into the targeted facial muscle, where it blocks nerve signaling
to that muscle. This prevents the muscle from contracting, which helps to relax the wrinkles that
appear from repeated facial movements.
Q;What does it treat?
A: Wrinkles that appear with movement, also known as dynamic rhytides. It is FDA-approved for lines
on the upper face (between the brows, forehead, and crows feet), but is used off-label for other areas
like the lips and neck.
Q: Does it hurt?
A: Not really! You will feel a series of tiny needle sticks and a little pressure. No numbing is needed
beforehand, but you can use ice afterward if that helps. You may have some bruising or a minor
headache after treatment, too.
Q: Will my face be “frozen”?
A: Not usually! It could be frozen if too much toxin is injected, especially in patients with smaller or
weaker facial muscles at baseline. But the goal is to still have some facial movement without wrinkling.
Q: How long does it last?
A: BTX takes effect within 2-4 days (ranges from 1-7) and usually lasts about 3 months.
Q: Are there different types of BTX?
A: Yes! There are four FDA-approved BTX-A products for cosmetic use. These are Botox, Dysport,
Xeomin, and Jeuveau. All 4 work the same way with some minor technical differences. At Susong
Dermatology, Dr. Brown currently uses Jeuveau and Dysport.
Hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane are injected into the face to smooth wrinkles, plump/define lips,
and add volume to areas that are sagging from the normal aging process. At Susong Dermatology, we
strive to produce results that are natural and NOT overdone—we start slow and can always add more
volume/product later! You will look like yourself, just well-rested and 5-10 years younger!
Dr. Brown starts with an in-depth consultation to review your expectations, concerns, budget, and
specific facial features. Once we have a plan, filler injections are done in a 15-30 minute visit with
minimal downtime. And results are immediately visible! You can combine filler injections with
botulinum toxin injections on the same day if you wish.
As with any procedure, there are risks with filler injections, including bruising, infection, or injecting
the product into blood vessels. Dr. Brown is a board-certified physician with advanced training and
understanding of facial anatomy, and your safety is her primary concern.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is an exciting new treatment being explored in many fields,
from orthopedic and dental surgery to hair loss and skin rejuvenation.Dr. Brown offers PRP
injections at Susong Dernatology for hair restoration, and uses PRP in conjunction with
microneedling for acne scarring and anti-aging.
So how does PRP help hair loss?
– Concentrated platelets collected from your own blood are injected into your scalp
– The platelets release growth factors that “wake up” dormant hair follicles, stimulating them to
– Very safe: no injected synthetic chemicals or medications!
– Useful for androgenetic alopecia (hormonal/genetic hair loss), alopecia areata, and other
– Often combined with with nutritional supplements, finasteride, and/or minoxidil for the best
The procedure itself is quick with little to no downtime.
First, a nurse or MA draws your blood.
You wait 15-20 minutes while your blood spins in the centrifuge. This pulls all the red and white
blood cells down to the bottom of the tube and leaves gold-yellow plasma at the top.
Next, the pl atelet-rich plasma (PRP) layer is collected into syringes.
Finally, Dr. Brown injects about 5 mL of PRP spread out over the area of hair loss.
Once PRP is ready, the injection procedure only takes about 5-10 minutes.
Side effects are minimal and include only mild discomfort, swelling, or headache.
Dr. Brown recommends monthly injections for 3-6 months initially to get the best results, then
1-2 treatments per year to maintain hair growth.
Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is becoming increasingly popular for
treatment of various skin conditions, including acne scarring, fine lines, striae (stretch marks),
hyperpigmentation, and atrophic scars. Dr. Brown recommends this procedure for patients with
moderate to severe acne scarring, as it provides excellent results with minimal downtime at an
How does it work? The tiny needles of the microdevice poke small channels in the dermis, stimulating
wound healing; this leads to breakdown of scar tissue, new collagen formation, and an influx of
growth factors, all of which give your skin a renewed, glowing appearance.
You might have seen at-home needling devices advertised… we do NOT recommend these home
devices, as the efficacy is inconsistent and the risk for infection is higher than in-office professional
treatments! We currently use the Stratapen device with either a hyaluronic acid serum (SkinCeuticals
Hydrating B5 gel) or platelet rich plasma (PRP) at Susong Dermatology. Most patients need 3-5
sessions to achieve the best results for scarring and fine lines.
Are you tired of shaving, plucking, or waxing? Do you get razor bumps or acne-like breakouts when
you get rid of unwanted hair? If so, you may want to consider laser hair removal at Susong
Potential treatment areas include:
Face, especially the upper lip and chin
Rosy cheeks are often regarded as youthful; however, rosacea sufferers may not view them so fondly. If
you struggle with persistent facial redness or telangiectasias (those tiny dilated blood vessels), a
pulsed-dye laser treatment may provide you long-term improvement.
At Susong Dermatology, we use our PDL (a.k.a. Vbeam) to target many different vascular conditions,
including rosacea, hemangiomas, and port wine stains (vascular birthmarks). In most cases, rosacea
patients need at least 3 treatments for the best results. The procedure takes 10-30 minutes with
minimal discomfort (like a rubber band snap). After, you can expect slightly increased redness and
sensitivity (like a sunburn) for 1-2 days, and you’ll need to avoid sun exposure. You will see results
within 4-8 weeks!
Susong Dermatology is excited to be the FIRST practice in Chattanooga to offer Opus Plasma
fractionated plasma skin resurfacing treatments!
Like traditional laser resurfacing, Opus Plasma removes a tiny fraction of skin to form a pattern of
microscopic injuries, which stimulates the surrounding skin to repair itself. But unlike laser-based
technologies, Opus uses a one-of-a-kind Plasma technology that precisely controls the energy-to-tissue
contact time, minimizing unwanted inflammation that often leads to longer recovery and days (or
weeks) of downtime with laser treatment.
What can you expect?
Opus Plasma is a quick, 20-30 minute outpatient treatment performed
following application of a topical anesthetic. During your consultation, Dr. Brown will assess your
skin to personalize the best treatment plan for you. Opus is a versatile tool that can be used for a wide
range or patients with different age groups, skin types and skin concerns. Dr. Brown can dial the
energy up or down to personalize the right treatment plan for your needs.
What about after the procedure?
A clinical study has shown that Opus Plasma required 50% less
downtime when compared to a fractional skin resurfacing technology using a laser. When using
moderate settings, the downtime is minimal. You may experience 24 to 48 hours of mild to moderate
redness and swelling – not significant to interfere with your daily activities. While you’ll begin to enjoy
noticeable improvements within 2-4 weeks following your first treatment, 2 to 3 treatments may be
recommended for optimal results.
Among other concerns, Opus Plasma can be used to address acne scarring, fine lines around the eyes
and mouth, wrinkles, enlarged pores, stretch marks, and uneven skin texture. For more information,

At SkinCeuticals, our mission is to improve skin health. Our skincare philosophy
centers on three main pillars: PREVENT. PROTECT. CORRECT. These principles work
synergistically to provide the healthiest skin possible and optimal anti-aging results. Research and
innovation are at the core of the SkinCeuticals mission, and our dedication to science has established
the brand as a leader in the advanced skincare arena. The company’s founding was the direct result of a
revolutionary discovery that set the standard for antioxidant formulation. SkinCeuticals continues to
pioneer next-generation products that will optimize the health and beauty of the skin—and change the
face of skincare for years to come.
Over 15 years ago, Neocutis was founded on the basis of extensive wound healing research
performed in Lausanne, Switzerland. When our first wound healing technology was found to
scarlessly heal burned skin, while making it appear healthier and more youthful, Neocutis scientists
began to explore how to apply the same principles to improve the appearance of aging skin. Neocutis
began developing products that support natural healing by stimulating the processes that regenerate
and restore the key building blocks of skin structure—namely, collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid.
Since then, our ongoing cutting-edge research and meticulous craftsmanship with only the best
cosmetic ingredients have led to the development of products that deliver targeted peptides and
proteins to help nourish and rejuvenate skin.
In 2016, skinbetter science® set out to create a new paradigm in skincare, not only for patients, but for the physicians, nurses, aestheticians and surgeons who help patients achieve beautiful skin. Our award-winning products are backed by a diverse team with decades of experience in clinical research and development (in powerhouse products like Restylane® and Dysport®) and furthered by a continued commitment to the study of skincare science and the introduction of new technologies.
